In an effort to introduce our younger generations to the world of opera, for the past few years Opera Idaho has toured our local schools with Opera in a Box, a program geared towards students in grades K-6, written by local mezzo-soprano Tiffany Calás. In a change of format, 2011’s outreach program toured a 50-minute condensed version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and in 2013′s outreach program toured a 50-minute condensed version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
In April 2015, Opera Idaho visited schools once again with Opera in a Box. Opera in a Box is an immensely entertaining lesson in opera. With the help of a box filled with costumes and props, four opera singers and a pianist performed some of opera’s “greatest hits”, while dispelling many typical stereotypes. From Rossini’s The Barber of Seville to Bizet’s Carmen, this outstanding live performance introduced over 6,000 students to this wonderful art form.
In October 2015, leading up to the mainstage production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Opera Idaho once again visited elementary schools in the treasure valley with the Mini Magic Flute, the 50-minute condensed version of the opera. We were able to increase our reach introduce over 8,200 students and educators to opera.
Patients, visitors and staff at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center were treated to the healing sounds of music. Opera Idaho Resident Company singers Melissa Bagwell, Dena Holland and Curtis Crafton performed on Wednesday, May 11, in the lobby of the hospital as part of its "Music in The Air" program. They were accompanied by John Bostron. Channel 6 was on location.
