Opera Idaho’s children’s programs are designed to encourage acceptance, appreciation and enjoyment of opera in young people. Opera Idaho hopes to enable students to experience a live opera performance first hand with professional singers, and acquaint students with opera terminology, history and the lives of great opera composers. Opera Idaho’s programs also introduce students to the significance of theater, set and costume design in opera.
The Opera Idaho Children’s Choruses program provides learning and performing experiences in classic repertoire, and encourages healthy vocal technique for children through membership in a vocal ensemble. Musical education objectives are accomplished through weekly rehearsal sessions and performances through the year. Performances range from choral concerts to appearing in Opera Idaho and Ballet Idaho productions and other venues throughout the Treasure Valley.
The program includes two vocal groups:
Children’s Chorus, ages 5th-10th grade
Angelus Chorus, ages 2nd-4th grade
The program is tuition-based; scholarships are available in limited number for those showing financial need.
Opera Idaho Young Voices
A new program from Opera Idaho
We would like to announce the pilot season of our new offering, the Opera Idaho Young Voices Program. This will be a program for Juniors and Seniors in High School who are looking to enrich their study of classical vocal music and solo performance. In weekly classes, participants will have a chance to learn things like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for foreign languages, take master classes and coachings from guest directors and performers, and enjoy solo and group performance opportunities. All of this will be offered at a reasonable cost to families.
The impetus for the program is what we perceive to be a gap in training for those really serious singers who are Juniors and Seniors in High School. While this gap could be filled by private lessons, the cost of that can be a serious determent for some families. This leaves our students at a disadvantage when it comes time to audition for college music programs.
Auditions will be required and will be held in January. Regular classes will go from January through May. As stated above, this is a pilot program half-season, and by next year we plan for it to take place during the full calendar school year.

Younger singers are asked to sing “Twinkle, Twinkle” in three different keys and then echo clapping. This is so we can determine the singer’s range, if they can move up, find their pitch and follow tempo.
The older singers must sing “America” (My Country ‘tis of Thee). Then we will check their vocal range, do some tonal memory activities, have them read rhythms from flash cards, and then sing a round together with the director.
